Native Preference Applies Pursuant PL93-638 SUMMARY/GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF RESPONSIBILITIES: This position performs Science Writer functions for the following two NASA science publications: 1) Spinoff, NASA’s premier annual publication that highlights successful, commercialized NASA technologies, and 2) Technology Innovations, a quarterly e-publication. Writing feature articles for these two publications is the primary duty of the position. Other work includes writing celebrity Public Service Announcements and other outreach materials such as brochures, flyers and presentations, writing content for the Spinoff website and social media sites such as Facebook, and interfacing with a broad audience ranging from NASA scientists and engineers to company executives and marketing/public relations personnel regarding spinoff topics. This position is involved in enhancing the design of Spinoff as it migrates to an e-publication. ESSENTIAL DUTIES & JOB FUNCTIONS: • Interfaces with scientists, marketing principals, and public relations personnel to generate story leads for publication. • Writes feature-length science articles by utilizing information researched from technical publications and Internet resources, manufacturers' promotional material and advertising campaigns, and interviews with manufacturers and NASA sources. • Verifies technology transfer with NASA field centers and company representatives. • Coordinates with the Web/Graphic Designer on design, layouts, and image selection for publication and other collateral. • Develops new marketing materials such as posters, flyers, brochures, etc. for NASA’s Technology Transfer Program Office (TTPO). • Proofreads and edits the annual and quarterly publications as well as Web content and additional collateral. Attends technical trade shows and conferences to obtain story leads and vendor contacts. • Updates the Team’s story leads tracking spreadsheet. • Updates the Spinoff Web site, the NASA database, and social media pages. • Responds to inquiries from NASA and the public. • Organizes, supports, and staffs marketing events identified by TTPO. • Participates in spinoff and technology transfer marketing events sponsored by NASA.
